Truck was a total loss, fire was likely due to mechanical issue

ROCHELLE — There were no injuries after a box truck fire on Friday morning on Petro Drive in Rochelle, Rochelle Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedic Tyler Carls said.

RFD was called to 900 Petro Drive at 11:17 a.m. for a vehicle fire and arrived on scene at 11:23 a.m., had water on the fire at 11:26 a.m. and had the fire controlled at 11:31 a.m. The driver of the box truck was driving through town and noticed an issue with the brakes on the truck and went to Petro to get the issue worked on when he noticed the fire, Carls said.

The fire was mostly contained to the brakes and tires but did have some spread to the box of the truck.

“It appears that the fire started due to a mechanical issue,” Carls said. “There was no injury to the driver or damage to the cargo. There were no hazardous materials in the truck. There was plenty of space from other trucks and the fuel station. We were able to get the road blocked off and there was a fire hydrant close nearby.”

Carls said the truck was a total loss due to the fire, with its value in the “several thousand dollar” range. Responding to the fire Friday was RFD’s chief, rescue truck, ambulance, engine, and the Rochelle Police Department. Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:27 p.m.
