DEKALB — Junior Carson Lewis delivered a 3-for-3 outing at the dish to lead the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team on offense during Wednesday’s nonconference matchup against DeKalb.

Lewis singled three times and was one of three Rochelle players to record an RBI during the team’s 9-3 loss to the Barbs. Seniors Chandler Cunningham and Braden Behrens each added RBIs for the Hubs (6-20, 0-14 Interstate 8), who will host Harvard at RTHS on Thursday night.

Freshman Brody Bruns started on the mound for Rochelle, throwing three innings while striking out two batters and holding DeKalb to two hits. Lewis fired the final three frames for the Hubs, who held a 1-0 lead after Behrens drove home Lewis on an RBI groundout in the top of the second inning. Rochelle went ahead 3-0 in the top of the third inning, where Lewis smacked an RBI single into left field and Cunningham brought home another run on a sacrifice fly to center.

DeKalb erased its three-run deficit in the bottom of the third inning, where the Barbs tallied four runs on two hits including an RBI double from Brodie Farrell and an RBI groundout from Maddux Clarence. DeKalb added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs on one hit as well as two Rochelle errors and a fielder’s choice grounder up the middle.

The Barbs iced their win with two runs on two hits, including an RBI single from Cole Latimer, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rochelle finished with nine hits in the loss, all of them singles.
