Head coach Lizzie Cartwright has been spending time throughout the summer getting to know many of the new players who are competing for the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity tennis team this season.

The Rochelle Hub varsity soccer team returns starters at all three levels this season, which kicked off with the first fall practice on Monday afternoon. Rochelle will host Genoa-Kingston on Monday, Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. for its first match of the 2024 campaign.

The Rochelle Hub varsity golf team welcomes back each of its top three players from the 2023 season, when the purple and white finished with a 2-10 overall record and an 0-5 mark in the Interstate 8 Conference. With a young core and a blend of other new and returning players, head coach Glen Mehrings said a winning record is among the team’s goals for 2024.

The Dale Bergeson era is officially underway at Rochelle Township High School, which held its first official practice of the 2024 boys and girls cross country season Monday afternoon. Rochelle will hold two weeks of practices before taking the court for its first match of the season at Belvidere on Monday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m.

The Rochelle Hub varsity football team will have only a few starters to replace from the 2023 season, when the purple and white went 7-3 overall while winning the Interstate 8/Kishwaukee River Blue Division and clinching their third consecutive postseason berth. 

Rochelle basketball standout Eli Luxton earned Interstate 8 honors over each of his last two seasons with the Hubs. The 6-foot-5 guard will be continuing his career at the collegiate level after signing earlier this summer with Kishwaukee College, where he will study engineering. 

Ian Metzger’s improved chipping allowed him to take advantage of soft greens and minimize his mistakes during the 12th Annual Dennis Berg Memorial Tournament at Fairways Golf Course, where Metzger was crowned the youngest club champion in history.

Senior linebacker Ethan Goodwin was among the returning starters making plays on defense this past Tuesday, when the Rochelle Hub varsity and fresh-soph football teams traveled west for a combined practice at Sterling that included 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills.

Former Rochelle student-athlete Gabrielle Harding wasn’t ready to let her track and field career end after what she felt was a challenging senior season at Concordia University Chicago.
